Children once again playing outside en masse… how do you achieve that in today’s digital world? There’s a simple solution to this problem according to Team Fairy Tale, the big winner of the second edition of Startup Weekend Eindhoven: use recognizable images from fairytales and project these into the environment with a mobile application. During the 54 hours this initial idea from Stefan Zwegers and Niek Otten developed into a real business and the team walked away with a prize package worth € 10,000!

In this second edition of Startup Weekend Eindhoven 60 participants worked through the whole weekend on their new businesses. On Friday no less than 32 ideas were presented, from which 10 teams were eventually formed to work on just as many startups. At the end of the weekend five of these even had a working prototype.

A worthwhile niche in a crowded, but enormous market

54 hours later the jury, comprising Merien ten Houten (Iphion), Peter Kentie (PSV), Geert Hurks (Hurks), Margot Nijkamp-Diesfeldt (MBAHolst Centre), Jelto Smits (Prime Ventures), and Hans Bloemen (Eindhoven Corporate Finance Group BV), passed judgement on the final presentations from the startups. The jury, full of heavyweights from the business world, selected Fairy Tale as the winner. This application uses augmented reality. According to the jury a crowded and enormous market, where this team still has a chance. They have found a valuable niche by responding to the desire from parents to once again see their children actively playing outside.

The second prize was won by SafeSociety: “Relevant, with great potential’ said Peter Kentie. This startup has developed a smartphone application that can in the case of an emergency quickly call on people in the immediate vicinity. The jury was particularly impressed with how well this team had thought about the financial feasibility, such as links to existing security organisations and a freemium/premium model.

The third prize went to team Leelio: an inspired pitch and a tangible product, according to Merien van Houten. They have thought of a concept for young children in hospital that reminds them of their mother. In addition Lilian Kuyper was awarded an individual prize for the most promising idea.

Brainport has an anthem!

Brabant may have no real anthem, but the Brainport region now does: the video clip “Takin’ Position” from the Eindhoven rap formation 2Solo had its official premiere during the weekend. The video was recorded on The Strip, the High Tech Campus and other iconic Eindhoven locations. The clip also has a special role for TeamDARE, the robot band from the High Tech Campus. The song has since been passed around the world and has been seen by hundreds of Startup enthusiasts across the globe.
